New Southern Series announced by Australian Super Gas racers

The Australian Super Gas Racers will run a four-round Southern Super Gas Series this drag racing season, with three dates confirmed.

The series kicks off at Fuchs South Coast Raceway in November, returning to the Portland eighth mile facility in February and concluding at Sydney Dragway’s Nitro Champs event next May.

The Sydney event ties the series in with a round of ANDRA’s Rocket All Stars championship.

“A major consideration in setting up this series was to provide more racing opportunities for Victorian racers who have been without a regular championship season for over a decade,” Super Gas spokesman Michael Bibby said.

“Super Gas is close, exciting and affordable racing and the Southern Super Gas Series will encourage racers to get their cars out of the garages and back onto the track where they belong.

“We had fruitful discussions with a number of tracks and are pleased to be able to confirm three rounds, with a fourth and final date to be announced very soon.”

The Portland events will run over the eighth mile with a 6.30 second index, while the Sydney round will be contested over the full quarter mile with the standard 9.90 second ANDRA index.

“One of the things that we also wanted to do was vary the format to spice up the competitor interest and the different track lengths and indexes do that,” Bibby said.

“A further example is that at Portland in November first round ‘buy backs’ will be allowed and we will also run the popular ‘Dash For Cash’.”

Southern Super Gas Series competitors have two opportunities to earn points at each round – the best average elapsed time during qualifying and regular race results.

There is no series entry fee with all Super Gas entries eligible to earn points.
