Deputy Chief Minister, Delia Lawrie, today inspected some of the mean machines taking part in this weekend’s NT Drag Racing Titles and announced funding for the inaugural Darwin round of ‘Slamfest’ to be held at Hidden Valley next month.

“Drag racing is an exciting sport very popular in the Territory and this weekend will see some of our fastest and bravest compete in the NT Drag Racing Titles,” Ms Lawrie said.

“This is part of a magnificent Dry Season for drag racing fans, who will next month see the nation’s best in the Aussie Slamfest Drag Racing Championships.

“The Henderson Government is a huge supporter of motorsport in the Territory and I am proud to announce today that $90,000 in funding will be provided to assist the Hidden Valley Drag Racing Association in hosting this national sporting event.

“This is the first time a Slamfest round will be held in Darwin, a coup for local fans and business operators, with around 90 teams and thousands of spectators attending.

“The two day event will showcase some of Australia’s fastest Doorslammers, with two local heroes taking part in this year’s series, Scott Maclean and Matt Abel.

“The Territory Government has made Hidden Valley the premier motorsport track in Australia, including a $4.57m partnership with the Australian Government to upgrade the drag strip so that world class events like these can be held in Darwin.

“The Territory Government is thrilled to host the first ever Aussie Slamfest Series in the Territory which will be a treat local revheads and a boon for our national profile.”
