Testing rule relaxed for Top Fuel opener

A special dispensation has been given to allocate Top Fuel teams a test session before the opening round of the ANDRA championship at Perth Motorplex next weekend.

The event is unique in that it features two rounds of the championship over two nights and uses the three round format, where teams get a single qualifying shootout followed by an elimination round and then the final.

ANDRA competition manager Brett Stevens said an approach was made by racer body Top Fuel Australia to ANDRA and Perth Motorplex who both agreed to the 2pm test session on the Saturday of Washpod Nitro Max, so teams can put on the best show possible. Normally there is ban on testing 36 hours before an event beginning.

“It is a dispensation offered to the event from the ANDRA board and operations committees, it is a one time exemption to the rule basically,” Stevens said. “It has been done before at the Nitro Thunder event at Calder Park in 2013 where a mid-afternoon test session was approved. There is no proposal or plan to blanket lift the 36 hour testing rule.”

The exemption may be offered at other events, particularly those using the three round format.

“There have already been some discussions in regards to the Santos Super 3 Extreme at Willowbank Raceway over Easter,” Stevens said.

“At events where the three round format is utilised, having the extra session can be of great benefit to the teams and certainly add to the show. Each request will be dealt with on an individual basis.”
