Sydney Dragway’s inaugural Aeroflow Triple Challenge put on a massive spectacle for motorsport fans with the burnout competition, drifting and Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Cars all tearing it up for the first time as a part of one massive show.
Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car’s Series Manager Steve Bettes explained, “To have such high level burnout cars to open the show was just something special. It was a great way to start the nitro show – smoke and fire!
“The crowd loved the burnouts and the drifting too, it was really something different for Sydney Dragway as well as for us as a series.
“The sights and the sounds of the event were totally different to what we normally do and I think the crowd responded well. The burnout show was jaw-dropping and the drifting was amazing as too.
The day kicked off with the Aeroflow Burnout competition and the superstars shone with Pete Grmusa’a ATRISK managing to get to top spot over Craig Whiddett’s CUTSIK. The two drivers were separated by just one half of one point in one of the closest battles ever held on the Sydney Dragway burnout arena.
The Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Cars also saw some close battles but it was a familiar name, Rick Gauci, who took the top step of the podium at the end of the night.
“The ‘Nitro Express’ did it again!” exclaimed an excited Gauci.
“Thanks to Graeme and Wendy (Cowin) and all the team, it was just one of those nights for us, it all clicked.”
On his way to the victory Gauci recorded the quickest ever Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car pass, registering a 5.58-second run that had the crowd standing on their feet.
Shane Olive filled the second spot on the podium aboard a new racecar, the ‘Red Devil’ ’57 Chev.
Olive explained “We had a few little things to sort on the car but it was a good night, we snuck up on it and to get second on debut was a good result for the boys.”
The third place getting was the ‘Let’s Boogie’ Mustang driven by Queenslander, Justin Walshe.
Walshe’s final race of the night was against fellow Queensland based racer, Paul Messineo that saw the two Mustangs side-by-side down the entire quarter mile.
The series now heads west, for a new year’s race at Perth Motorplex.
