Bellert family’s Winternationals dreams

Coming off a stellar performance at the Queensland Drag Racing Championships at Willowbank Raceway, the Bellert Racing Team are set to turn heads at the Fuchs Winternationals with three dragsters in two different Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series brackets.

The son and brother of the operation, Tony Bellert, is coming off a win in the QDRC Super Comp bracket with his impressive Spitzer dragster running a personal best of 6.85 seconds at 196 mph ensuring he will be in the mix when a tough 15 car Competition field descends on Willowbank Raceway.

“The QDRC was the debut of the new engine package which I have put together and was the first testing run for the Winters,” he said. “I had a soft tune up in it at the QDRC but will step it up at the Winters with the data I collected.”

Kellie Kidd, daughter of Phil Bellert, will front alongside her father with 39 other racers in a fiercely competitive Modified field.

Kidd experienced gearbox and converter issues leading up to the QDRC, but the event saw her come away with a personal best of 7.48 seconds at 178 mph.

“I was stressing as we have been going around in circles trying to locate our problems, which at this stage have been now sorted out,” she said. “I just hope everything stays that way for me at the Winternationals.”

“Having your daughter racing in the same bracket as yourself has its pros and cons,” added Phil. “It is amazing to look across and see your daughter in the lane racing beside you, then the challenges of having two cars in the same bracket sometimes are difficult.”

The Bellert family are looking for the trifecta in the winners circle even if it means father and daughter will have to battle it out for honours. But for all three family members to reach their respective finals will be a massive achievement for the team.

“To be able to have us all in our bracket finals would be a dream come true. We have been close a couple of times but to be able to do that at a national event would be a dream.”

The Bellert Racing Team will be attending the local Nandos Car Enthusiast Family Social Night in Toowoomba held on the last Saturday of every month at Nandos Toowoomba Plaza, 878 Ruthven Street.

This Saturday’s show marks the first time race cars will be apart of the event and it is free to attend.

The team will be at the show promoting the Fuchs Winternationals June 4-7 at Willowbank Raceway featuring 500 racers across the six ANDRA Drag Racing Series Group One categories and 12 Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series brackets from all over the country.
