Alice Springs’ Willox live and breathe drag racing and are excited for the Desert Nationals this weekend at Alice Springs Inland Dragway.

Mick and ‘Blondie’ (Geraldine) even built an HZ Kingswood together that Blondie will campaign.

“Drag racing is a big part of our relationship and our family,” said Mick. “Geraldine and I both race Super Sedan, she races the car we built together, an HZ Kingswood running a 405 small block Chev doing 10.7 seconds over the quarter-mile.

“I drive a UC Torana chassis car that we bought. It has a 388 SBC doing 9.5 seconds over the quarter. Then there is our son Daniel with his Junior Dragster running C/JD. He is not entered in the Desert Nationals because we are having trouble getting it to run within the elapsed time restrictions.”

The husband and wife pairing will go head to head at the Desert Nationals, an event that grows in stature each year following investment by local government to improve infrastructure including the recent addition of floodlights for year round racing.

“We both think it is a great thing for CADRA (Central Australian Drag Racing Association) to be hosting events like the Desert Nationals as it not only brings different people to race and learn from but a lot of businesses in town benefit from the extra people in town,” added Mick.

“Alice is a small town so it is hard getting new members, but yes I think we are slowly getting more racers coming and having a go and old racers coming back out, but it happens pretty slowly here.

“We have had some excellent funding and help recently that has left us with a quarter mile track that is lit up at night by LED lights, which are excellent to race under, but I personally can’t wait till the day a Top Fuel dragster does the quarter in Alice Springs. Think I might be waiting a while but you just never know!”

The best in Australian Sportsman racing descend on Alice Springs Inland Dragway for Round 1 of the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series at the 2015 Desert Nationals July 25-26.

Qualifying begins from 10am on Saturday July 25 and eliminations commence from 10am Sunday July 26. For more information and ticket prices please visit www.cadra.com.au.
