Five second surprise

Drive and determination to be competitive in the unforgiving Top Doorslammer class has pushed West Australian Marty Dack through the hard knocks to now be considered a genuine threat in the bracket.

Two years ago the thought of a five second pass down the quarter was a pipe dream.

“Holy hell, 2 years ago I thought running a 6.40 was quick. These cars are real animals and its taken me time to tame mine,” said Dack.

With continuing effort the team started to see they were headed in the right direction.

“It took while but eventually we started running 30’s and 20’s and we got stuck there for a while. Then finally we got a teen.”

That’s when the team stepped up big time and everyone started to take notice.

“I do remember being called a teen ass. But no, we actually started to run a few 6.0’s and put that to rest.”

“Last year we surprised a few people as well as ourselves, qualifying at the Goldenstates with a 6.07,” he said.

Top Doorslammer is arguably the toughest bracket in Australian Drag Racing with an oversubscribed field all attempting to make the final eight cut-off. Dack admits that to make the field came with a cost.

“We started pushing her and when you start to lean on the motor you start to hurt parts,” said Dack.

Rather than continue down the path of destruction, Dack re-assessed the situation and put a plan in motion to make the car more consistent.

“After the Nationals we took her home and stripped her down completely. Grant O’Rourke fitted a 4 Link and we went to town with the chassis and all her components.

“The engine got some more compression and we installed a new cam shaft design. Adam Croker, together with Darren Mayar, came up with a new fuel system/tune and off to the next test and tune we went to test the new combo.”

Unfortunately for the team, the next two test and tunes were rained out. The Goldenstates then became the first opportunity to test the car.

“We went in totally blind not knowing how the car will handle and what she can do,” remarked Dack

“First pass in qualifying we ran a half track shakedown pass.”

Much to Dacks surprise, the next pass produced a 5th qualifying 5.99 second pass, which also inducted him as a member of the 5 second club in Australia.

“We have since run a 5.95,and I can feel an .80 coming soon,” he said.

“The motor is loving going hard and fast, but it’s going to be difficult to continue to run as many meetings this year as our major sponsor has pulled out.

“On another note we have a great partnership with Valvoline which is working really well.

“So look out for the BA Falcon and make sure you all come down and say g’day,” Dack concluded.
