Australia’s most scenic eighth mile racetrack, Portland’s South Coast Raceway, will again rock to the sound of nitro as the Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car tour brings a massive field of flame-throwing funny cars to the iconic Victorian venue.

The return to Portland sees a number of new car and driver combinations make their debut at the picturesque drag strip.

Series Manager, Steve Bettes commented, “What a great field this going to be, some great new cars and combinations.

“This weekend, we welcome Darren Fry to the series, Darren is such a quality driver and operator, we can’t wait to see just how he is going to be in The Bandit!

“His licencing went perfectly, he has just taken to the outlaw nitro funny car like a duck to water. He will definite be one to watch, even in his debut event!”

For the February 20 event, the field includes nine outlaw nitro funny cars, as well as the crowd favourites – the two wheelstanding funny cars, Nitro Sheriff and Rocket Ship – complete with fire belching from their supercharged engines.

The event will also see the return of Victorian family team, The Russlers with driver Aaron Russell and team owner and father, Stephen Russell ready to put on a show at their local round.

The team has a brand new ‘Russler’ Pontiac funny car that was recently completed in preparation for the event.

The team’s crew chief Kim Tuohey recently travelled to the US to meet with Jason Rupert and his father Frank of Rupert Motorsports fame.

Tuohey was invited over to their workshop to check out their fuel set-up and exchange a few tips, which will be sure to benefit the team for the debut of the new car.

Darryl Walford will also be piloting the new Backdraft machine following a successful hit-out for the team at South Australia’s Whyalla eighth mile.

The Donnelly family will also be represented in both wheelstanders and nitro classes with Jake aboard the Bumblebee outlaw nitro funny car and brother Dan in the Rocket Ship ’57 Chev wheelstander.

“It’s a great field and we hope to get a bumper crowd for our teams as well as the guys at the FUCHS South Coast Raceway – we can’t wait to be it started!” laughed Bettes.

The ‘salute to the crowd’ nitro fire-up with be at 1pm with the cars racing at 2pm, 4pm and 6pm and features a full range of support categories.
