Will Zappia be able to hold back Kapiris?

A national record setting run and a runner up at the Nitro Champs in Sydney has left John Zappia in prime position to take a fifth Top Doorslammer title – but Victorian Peter Kapiris still stands in the way.

The Fuchs-Procomp Monaro ran a new personal best of 5.76sec at Sydney Dragway and Zappia says the performances are more like what he expected from the car.

“It is behaving how we want, with nice straight passes,” he said. “We are slowly creeping up in the speed but still a long way off the 256mph (412kmh) that Kapiris is able to get.

“We knew that Kapiris would throw everything at his car in Sydney to win in the final – this was his only championship chance. Unfortunately for me and the team we edged out of the perfect tuning window – and the car overpowered the track.

“We were very happy with the Fuchs Lubricants / Procomp Electronics Monaro during this event – one of the best Sydney events we as a team have been to.

“We now know that a second round win at the Winternationals will seal our fifth consecutive championship for Fuchs Lubricants, Procomp Electronics, Striker Crushing and Screening and all our other major and supporting sponsors and we look forward to the challenge.”

The Fuchs Winternationals takes place on June 8-11 at Willowbank Raceway near Ipswich, Queensland. The full ANDRA drag racing experience will be on show including all pro categories and the best sportsman racers in the nation taking part in the Rocket Allstars Racing Series.
