Cowin top qualifies in Perth

A thrilling last session saw Andrew Cowin edge into the number one spot after qualifying in round four of the Australian Top Fuel Championship at Perth Motorplex.

Cowin needed a pedal on his pass but a 4.77 at 318mph was enough to nab the position.

The last session of Top Fuel was thrilling as racers traded the top positions.

Harris struck the first blow with a 4.81 which stole pole from Morgan’s second session 4.86/313, which itself had ousted the first session 4.89 from Mark Sheehan.

Sheehan was unable to improve in the last session when he over revved in the burnout and popped the chutes out.

Phil Read and Martin Stamatis ran 4.91 and 4.92 passes respectively in the last session to claim 5th and 6th positions on the ladder. There was plenty of controversy earlier in the night when they were turned away from the staging lanes for being late for session two. Read’s pass was on a mid 4.6 before it got close to the centre line and he buttoned off.

Terry Sainty’s best run was a 5.77 while Phil Lamattina had a night he’d rather forget, popping a motor on the second pass and not returning for the third session, a 6.27 his best run.

It has left him to face Cowin in round one. Harris will take on Sainty, Morgan will battle Stamatis and Sheehan will race Read in a big time introduction to Top Fuel.
