Eighth mile action is back bigger than ever, with the 2012 JP Racing Eighth Mile Drag Racing Series formally announced today by series organisers.

The third running of the popular regional racing series welcomes a new major sponsor in JP Racing, a new racing bracket and is expected to draw more than 100 entries to each of its four rounds.

Taking in Willowbank Raceway, Benaraby Dragway, Ironbark Dragway and Warwick Dragway, series organiser John Winterburn said the series had answered a need within the regional drag racing community.

“Eighth mile drag racing is a great thing – it is about racing, but it is also about camaraderie, and about having a go at tracks all around Queensland,” said Winterburn.

“When we started this series three years ago we were taken aback by the enthusiasm with which it was received, and since then it has grown from strength to strength.

“With JP Racing throwing their support behind us and the new category of FJ Loy and Sons Earthmoving Old School being introduced to replace the Classic bracket, I have a feeling the 2012 season is going to be the best yet!”

JP Racing specialises in new and used performance equipment, race and street auto transmissions and HD components, special project engines, project management and magneto sales and service.

JP Racing’s John Payne said the decision to get behind the regional drag racing series was an easy one.

“When Stomper (Winterburn) asked me to get behind this series, with everything he does for the little guy I just couldn’t refuse,” said Payne, a multi-championship holder with more than 25 years of drag racing experience.

“Series like this are so important for our sport – it is the breeding ground for the next generation of racers.

“It is about giving them a prestige series, something they can really get their teeth into while they decide where they want to go in the big scheme of things.

“It is great for my business of course – a lot of my customers race in these kinds of events – but it is about more than just business, it is about giving back to the guys who support me, and to supporting the future of this sport and the people within it like Stomper and his team who work so hard.”

The 2012 JP Racing Eighth Mile Drag Racing Series will play host to Diamond T Products Junior Dragster, Queensland Nameplate Group Modified Bike, John Williams Auto Sales Super Street, Super Sedan, RD Williams Excavator Parts Modified and the new FJ Loy and Sons Earthmoving Old School bracket (replacing the previous ‘classic’ bracket).

Kicking off at Willowbank Raceway on 21 April, the series will then head to Benaraby Dragway for round two on 21 July. Roma’s Ironbark Dragway will then step up to the plate on 25 August, before the final round gets going at Warwick Dragway on 10 November 2012.
