It is with great sorrow that we must advise that Australia has lost iconic drag racer Mick Atholwood, who passed away today after a short illness.

Mick Atholwood will always be remembered as the true gentleman of Drag Racing in Australia. He will be sorely missed by all who have met him in his journey through life.

Many in recent times remember Mick as the team owner and crew chief of the Atholwood and Smith fueler. Whilst mainly racing at his home track of Willowbank raceway this car brought great joy to Mick when he was finally able to run a four second pass with Roy Smith at the wheel.

achieving that 4 second dream

Though for most, Mick will be remembered for his stunning 78 Corvette nitro Funny Car which graced our tracks in the late 70’s and early 80’s and ultimately ended up flipping over in a burnout and curtailed Micks driving career.

Rest In Peace Mick.
